The buzzword among founders today is the “three-person unicorn”: AI-native startups that achieve remarkable revenues and billion-dollar valuations with incredibly small teams. Cursor, an AI coding assistant based in the US, exemplifies this trend, reportedly hitting US$100 million in annual recurring revenue with just about 20 employees.
But how does this dream stack up against the reality in Southeast Asia? In this edition’s featured article, my colleague Duc Tran and I took a closer look into our recent earnings coverage and found some unexpected leaders in revenue per employee.
Surprisingly, the region’s most efficient firm by this metric isn’t a pure software play but a hardware company: Secretlab, a Singapore-based maker of gaming chairs.
While these figures showcase strong efficiency, it’s crucial to note that high revenue per employee doesn’t always equate to profitability. In fact, some of the companies with the lowest revenue per employee have hit that goalpost.
Despite the current benchmarks, a new crop of AI startups is emerging in Southeast Asia that could redefine traditional playbooks with lean, disruptive approaches. But as the AI industry continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, only time will tell where these companies will land in our future updates.
