Chinese anime fans are in for a treat this week, as Seal Online (씰 온라인), the point-and-click MMORPG from Korea’s Grigon Entertainment, hits open beta nationwide. The game is being published in China by Kunlun, and you can get in on the open beta right here once it starts on Thursday.
But wait, you might be saying, isn’t Seal Online an old game? Like, super old? Indeed, the first version of the game launched over a decade ago in Korea, and also operated successfully in China for many years. The version coming to China now is being touted by Kunlun as “new” Seal Online, but in a lot of ways it seems to just be the same old game, and it’s clear that the game’s relaunch in China is, at least in part, a nostalgia play.
If you’re looking for bloody battle, Seal Online may not be for you, as the game sports a very cartoony anime style and is targeted, at least to some extent, at children. (The Kunlun website says the game is suitable for ages 12 and up). I don’t think anyone’s expecting the rebooted Seal to become one of China’s top games, but the original release did attract a lot of users in China, and it will be interesting to see if the “new” Seal Online can repeat that success by cashing in on gamers’ nostalgia for one of the top games of their youth.
