Hi readers,
I’m guessing you’ve seen at least one movie where a perfectly mapped out bank heist or weekend trip doesn’t go as planned.
The story interests us only once all hell breaks loose, and people not only have to depend on their own instincts and capabilities but also have to trust those around them.
Though it wasn’t life-threatening like in the movies, I saw quite a bit of this drama while working for newspaper dailies. My colleagues and I would camp in the office for two days straight while working on special supplements. Our lives would get so entangled that boundaries between departments would fade away – everyone would be doing a bit of everything to make sure we met the printing press’s post-midnight deadline.
The most recent of Tech in Asia’s mafia stories reminded me of just this: of past jobs and the friendships formed during those times. Much like Sea’s alumni, my former colleagues and I did a bit of everything, and that eventually sent us out in different directions.
Read our story and you’ll find the diversity of the startups that Sea’s alumni have gone on to establish, from investment funds to ecommerce-related ventures to edtech companies.
The Sea alumni I spoke to believe that we are going to see more new startups from this network soon: Former colleagues-turned-friends have told them of their entrepreneurial dreams. While we recognize those who’ve already taken the leap, I think there’s good reason to be excited about these fledgling founders too.
Sea is one of those companies that’s akin to a barn of bet-worthy horses. We can hope for even more promising things from those that would be coming out of this stable, don’t you think?
— Nikita Puri, journalist at Tech in Asia
