Tony Fernandes has resigned as AirAsia X group CEO only four months after taking up the executive role, The Edge Markets reported. Effective immediately, the decision was made due to “other commitments,” he said.
Previously, Fernandes was a non-independent non-executive director at the company. Fernandes stepped into the role after his predecessor Nadda Buranasiri resigned in April.
Malaysia-based AirAsia X is the sister company to budget airline AirAsia and operates medium- to long-haul flights.
Fernandes is largely known for turning the previously indebted government-linked airline into a thriving company, listed on the Malaysian stock exchange. He has been with AirAsia for over 20 years.
AirAsia X recently announced that it will expand medium-haul routes from Bangkok to cities in Japan, South Korea, and Australia amid high demand, “reactivating” 175 pilots and 285 cabin crew who had been previously furloughed at the height of the pandemic.
