We have another new social network. Salesforce recently announced the launch of chatter.com, a free tool for any business to create a private social network. Rolled out as a private beta version 12 months ago, Chatter.com is now open for businesses to set up private social networks at zero cost.
The new Salesforce product is believed to be an assimilation of social networking sites and collaborative cloud technology, drawing inspirations from Facebook, Twitter and Google Wave. According to Salesforce’s Customer Relationship Survey, it was reported that Chatter.com would reduce email usage by 32 percent and reduce the number of meetings by 28 percent. More statistics in the graphic below:

It remains to be seen if Chatter.com could take flight. Alternatives like Facebook Group, Ning and Google Group could pose a challenge. However, over the years, Salesforce has built a strong and reliable brand name as an enterprise cloud computing solution provider. Features like large file sharing and encryption collaborations are key motivations for corporations to sign up for Chatter.com. Chatter.com claims to have served over 60,000 corporations, which includes Dell, NBC and Pandora. A testimony from Dell reads: ““Our sales team responds more quickly on Chatter.”
Below are screenshots showcasing Chatter.com’s file sharing and confidential discussion respectively:
