China is getting the Warcraft movie before the US

warcraft-movie

Fans of the massively popular video game series Warcraft are all over the globe, and this summer, they’re getting the movie adaptation they’ve been wanting for years. Given it’s a Hollywood film, you might reasonably expect it to release in the United States first. But you’d be wrong, because it turns out China is getting it two days earlier.

0063jmyqjw1f3j0rknloyj31jk264e82This news was announced Wednesday via the film’s official Sina Weibo account, which tweeted that the film’s official release date in China is June 8 (it’s coming to the US on June 10). It also tweeted out this poster for the film (right), which further confirms the June 8th China release date.

The Warcraft games – both World of Warcraft and the original Warcraft RTS series – are extremely popular in China, so it isn’t unreasonable that the film’s producers want it to launch there first. Warcraft 3 is still a widely-played game in the Chinese PC gaming community, despite the fact that it was first released almost 15 years ago. But the more significant reason may be that Legendary Entertainment, the American film production company that’s one of the chief forces behind the film, was purchased by China’s Wanda Group earlier this year.

In case you’ve been living under a rock (or in some kind of orc village), here’s the latest trailer for the film. Given Chinese gamers’ appetite for the source material, it’s expected that this film will do very well in China.
