Taiwan’s President Ma Ying Jeou has launched his Facebook page on Friday in a bid to connect with netizens.
In his introductory video, President Ma said that he needed to learn how other government officials like U.S President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have used social media as a channel to communicate with citizens.
President Ma said that he will try his best to manage the Facebook page on his own. But also stated that his assistants will help him keep it updated.
The page is hugely popular with over 340,000 ‘likes’ so far. It also commands high engagement rate with one of his status update generating over 20,000 ‘likes’ and 4,000 comments.
Presidential Office spokesman Lo Chih-chiang said, “statistics showed that 72.5 percent of the Taiwanese population have Internet access and that it was natural for the government to “have a heart-to-heart talk” with the public via the Internet”.
Facebook became the natural choice of communication platform as the social network houses more than 8 million Taiwanese users.
