“Japanese police on Tuesday filed charges against the Japanese office of food delivery service Uber Eats and two company representatives for suspected breach of immigration law by hiring foreigners without a legal status,” reported Reuters, citing Japanese news publication Kyodo News.
Details:
- Uber Eats in Japan had hired undocumented Vietnamese citizens as delivery staff, according to an Asahi Shimbun report.
- A former Uber official in charge of compliance, who was also included in the charges, reportedly admitted to knowing there was a problem with the foreigners’ registration.
Context:
- Uber Eats saw a rise in the number of restaurant contracts in Japan during the early days of Covid-19 restrictions.
- Japan has a general labor issue involving Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian migrant workers who come into the country as technical interns, with some of them facing sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace.
