Report: Twitter’s woes in India persist as it faces new police cases in the country

“Police in India have registered three new cases against Twitter for allegedly hurting sentiments and promoting child pornography, marking an escalation in the row between the US firm and Indian authorities,” Reuters reported.

Details

  • Authorities have named Twitter India managing director Manish Maheshwari in complaints that came in after the company had featured a map depicting the politically sensitive northern provinces of Jammu and Kashmir and the Buddhist enclave Ladakh as regions outside of India. Twitter later dropped the map from its website.
  • On Tuesday, Delhi police registered another complaint against Twitter over the alleged availability of content that feature sexual abuse and child pornography on its platform.

Context

  • Twitter and the Indian government have been at loggerheads since January after the micro-blogging platform failed to comply with directives to take down certain content and posts.
  • Earlier this month, Twitter came under government scrutiny once again when it had failed to comply with some of the norms of India’s new IT rules. The company is said to have already lost its intermediary status, opening it to lawsuits and legal proceedings.
