Report: Tesla to launch manufacturing unit in southern India

Details:

• State chief minister BS Yediyurappa also reportedly tweeted that Tesla would be establishing an R&D unit in Bengaluru. The tweet was deleted soon after.
• The news was revealed in a statement, which is part of a document detailing India’s budget.

Context:

• The electric vehicle maker has recently registered a unit in India.
• Tesla is also planning on entering Singapore, having already received a pre-delivery inspection approval from the country’s Land Transport Authority.
• It will also come up with a smaller and cheaper Tesla – priced at US$25,000 – which will be designed at a research center at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai.
