Chinese regulator orders app stores to ban Didi due to data violation

“A Chinese regulator has ordered smartphone app stores to stop offering Didi Global’s app after finding that the ride-hailing company had illegally collected users’ personal data,” Reuters reported.

Details:

  • Didi’s app is currently still working in China for people who had downloaded it prior to the ban order.
  • The company says that it will make changes to comply with the rules and protect its users’ rights. It has also stopped new user registration and will remove its app from app stores.

Context:

  • The announcement came only four days after Didi had begun trading on the New York Stock Exchange, raising US$4.4 billion in the process.
  • The company’s share price closed at US$15.53 after the announcement, down 5% compared to the previous day.
