Report: Tesla’s new $25k compact car will be designed and made in China

“Tesla China President Tom Zhu confirmed that a smaller and cheaper Tesla will be designed in China, at a research center at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai,” reported InsideEVs, citing an interview conducted by China-based state media channel Xinhua Net.

Details:

• According to Zhu, Tesla is working on the construction of a dedicated research and development center that will design the upcoming compact car at a target price of US$25,000.
• The new compact car is expected to be a hatchback version of the company’s Model 3 vehicle and will have a driving range of about 350km to 450km.

Context:

• Recently, Tesla was reported to be inching closer toward its launch in the Singapore market after it received a pre-delivery inspection approval from the country’s Land Transport Authority.
• The automobile company has also registered a company in India ahead of its launch in the country.
