“ByteDance has agreed to a US$92 million class-action settlement to settle data privacy claims from some US TikTok users,” Livemint reported.
Details:
- According to documents filed in a US court, ByteDance agreed to the settlement but disagrees with the assertions of the lawsuits.
- The settlement was reached following “an expert-led inside look at TikTok’s source code,” the motion seeking court approval of the settlement stated.
Context:
- The lawsuits claim that the short-video app “infiltrates its users’ devices and extracts a broad array of private data,” which allegedly includes biometric data and content used to track its users for ad targeting.
- Meanwhile, the Federal Trade Commission and the US Justice Department are also separately looking into allegations claiming TikTok has failed to uphold to its 2019 agreement to better protect the privacy of children on its platform.
