“Chinese search firm Baidu is launching a fully driverless, paid ride-hailing service in the outskirts of Beijing beginning on May 2,” Technode reported.
Details:
- Baidu will 0perate in western Beijing’s Shougang Industrial Park beginning May 2 with its fleet of 10 driverless vehicles.
- The ride-hailing service will be offered to customers without a human behind the wheel. However, a driver will sit in the passenger seat for safety purposes.
Context:
- The development comes after Baidu became the first Chinese company with permission to offer robotaxi rides to paying customers last month.
- The search engine giant said it generated US$4.6 billion in revenue for the three months ended December 31, up 5% from the same period last year.
