Indonesia with an estimated of over 269 million population and 1.9 million square miles of land, is the fourth biggest country in the world.

With its large population and potential, Indonesia is a good place to look to if you’re thinking of expanding your business. Of course, when mentioning startups and the digital ecosystem in this country, you probably have heard of Bukalapak, Tokopedia, and Traveloka that have scaled up to be country’s unicorns. There’s also Go-Jek, which turned into a decacorn recently.

What makes the startup ecosystem special in Indonesia?

The development of startups in Indonesia is also accompanied by the rise of investment in digital sector. A research conducted by Google and AT Kearney states that investments towards startups have increased 68 folds in the past five years. Out of the total investment in Southeast Asia’s startups, 19 percent went to Indonesia startups, while 41 percent went to Singapore.

The growth of Indonesia’s digital ecosystem in recent years has been somewhat affected by the country’s central government. President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, launched 4.0 industry revolution as a show of the government’s support of the use of information and technology to achieve higher efficiency.

In addition to the government’s support for the industry, startups can also play an active role to gain exposure from stakeholders and investors. One effective way of doing so is to join pitching competitions. Whether you are interested in Indonesia’s startup ecosystem or intending to expand your business to the region, Tech in Asia Conference’s Arena Pitch Battle is a segment you should look out for.
