WeChat ventures onto your desktop with new Mac app

WeChat, the China-made messaging app that’s trying to chat up new users around the world, now has a Mac app as a complement to its mobile experience. The new WeChat Mac app is very simple – it just does basic messaging and file transfers – and is essentially a packaged version of the existing ‘Web WeChat’ which works in any browser.

Despite that, it’s still a nice-looking native Mac app that, thankfully, isn’t made using Adobe Air or any such horribleness. Like the web app version, you’ll have to login to the Mac app by scanning a QR code with your phone:

Once inside, you can send text, photos, screenshots and basic emoticons – but not the huge stickers that apps like WeChat and Line are best known for. Here’s the main window:

When you stay logged in to the Mac app, alerts will pop up in the Mac’s menubar, and WeChat on your phone will remain silent. I wish services like Gmail and Twitter would do that.

The beta WeChat for Mac app is here, but it’s not yet in the Mac App Store or displayed on the WeChat homepage.
