9gag is one of Asia’s most popular startups – though most of its users probably don’t realize it was born in Hong Kong. With 80 million monthly unique visitors, it’s a viral media powerhouse that’s now embracing mobile gaming.
It started out as a fun side project in 2008, but it’s still going strong. Co-founder Ray Chan (pictured below) has taken his startup through 500 Startups and Y Combinator and raised almost US$3 million in funding (disclosure: Tech in Asia is also a YC graduate. Even more astonishingly, 9gag has retained and grown its community while rival sites like Digg screwed up badly by annoying its users, and the LOLcats-themed I Can Haz Cheezburger vanished out of sight faster than a cat on a hot tin roof. But it’s not been an easy journey for 9gag, and Ray Chan will give his side of the story at our Tech in Asia Singapore 2015 conference on May 6-7.
