Behind Jack Dorsey’s pick for Twitter CEO

Jack Dorsey is no longer the CEO of Twitter.

On Monday, Dorsey announced that he was passing on the baton to the company’s technology czar Parag Agrawal.

India-born Agrawal has also become the youngest CEO in the S&P 500, nudging Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg from the title.

According to Twitter’s filing, Agrawal will get a salary of US$1 million annually along with bonuses. He is also entitled to restricted stock units and performance-based stock units, valued at US$12.5 million.

Agrawal joined Twitter in 2011. Six years later, he was appointed as the CTO. According to the company, he spearheaded Twitter’s technical strategy and advancing machine learning, among other things.

Before becoming the tech chief, Agrawal was named Twitter’s first “distinguished engineer” for his work across revenue and consumer engineering, which includes his “impact on the re-acceleration of audience growth in 2016 and 2017,” the company said in a statement.

According to Agrawal’s LinkedIn bio, he was associated with research teams at prominent US tech companies such as AT&T, Microsoft, and Yahoo before joining Twitter.

He holds a doctorate in computer science from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

Dorsey’s bone-deep trust

Agrawal’s elevation may have surprised many with Dorsey being at the center of conversations on Twitter all these years. A low-profiled Agrawal, however, has been instrumental in turning things around for Twitter, according to Dorsey’s email to employees.

“He’s curious, probing, rational, creative, demanding, self-aware, and humble. He leads with heart and soul, and is someone I learn from daily. My trust in him as our CEO is bone-deep,” Dorsey wrote about Agrawal in his email.

Dorsey revealed that Agrawal had been his choice for some time and that he was unanimously appointed by the board.
