The crypto data sector suffers from fragmentation, requiring users to navigate multiple APIs to get a more comprehensive view into how cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens move. This can result in inefficiency and added costs for developers, traders, and researchers, CoinGecko co-founder Bobby Ong told Tech in Asia.
In a bid to solve this issue, the Malaysia-based crypto firm has acquired NFT data infrastructure provider Zash – its first-ever acquisition – to offer a one-stop solution that covers both fungible and non-fungible tokens. The terms of the deal remain undisclosed.
Founded in 2021, Zash provides indexed NFT data across 87 marketplaces on ethereum, polygon, BNB smart chain, solana, and bitcoin ordinals. Zash tracks NFT metadata, historical trade, and lending data.
Ong said that Zash’s coverage of NFT data is over 4x more than alternatives. Other platforms in the space include Bitquery, QuickNode, and Alchemy.
Additionally, Zash also looks out for wash trades – an illegal type of trading that manipulates prices by creating artificial market activity – at scale.
Meanwhile, CoinGecko tracks over 10,000 crypto assets from 900 exchanges and provides data points such as price, trading volume, market value, developer strength, and community statistics.
With the acquisition, Zash’s clients and partners gain access to CoinGecko’s crypto data API, which is also used by major companies like Metamask, Crypto.com, and Etherscan.
Ong said that CoinGecko is committed to all of Zash’s ongoing service agreements. The former plans to incorporate Zash’s NFT data infrastructure into its existing API product by the second quarter of 2024.
