Here’s the pitch battle winner from Tech in Asia Tour’s visit to Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is a city best known for cultural and culinary experiences. But it also has a large student population and strong startup scene. Our Tech in Asia Jakarta Tour was in Yogyakarta yesterday to hunt for the best local startup. Previous tour stops were Jakarta, Bandung, Ho Chi Minh City, and Surabaya.

Five Yogyakarta startups were invited to pitch in front of a panel of judges at Jogja Digital Valley. The winner was invited to participate at the upcoming Tech in Asia Jakarta Conference, taking place on November 11 and 12. The team will present their product at a free booth, and, obviously, receive free conference tickets. In addition, travel and accommodation costs are covered by Tech in Asia.

Judges on the panel last night were Melisa Irene from East Ventures, William Gozali from MDI Ventures, and Mardhani Riasetiawan, who is the CEO of Intelligent Technology Initiatives and a lecturer at the city’s prestigious Gajah Mada University (UGM).

Here are the five startups chosen to pitch:

CumaCeban

CumaCeban is a suite of mobile games that comes with a business model twist. Players need to buy coins to play, but if they win, they get something like a lottery ticket. This opens up the chance to win attractive prizes, such as an iPhone. Players can get free coins by inviting their friends to play, so there is a strong incentive to share the app.

Hoostia

Hoostia targets apartment owners that are too busy to manage renting out their apartment. It’s essentially an agent service with added value. There is an app that lets agents and owners log activities and plan ahead. Hoostia also includes a smart key system so that the agent does not need to hold a key. The doors can be opened by the owner at the press of a button in the app. Hoostia still operates in beta and is invite-only.

HRPlasa

HRPlasa is a marketplace for human resources professionals. It’s essentially a directory of HR experts, events, venues, and vendors. HRPlasa also acts as an event organizer. For parties interested in being listed in this directory, there’s the option of a free or a premium account.

HitsEnglish

HitsEnglish is an English-to-Indonesian translation tool. It has social features such as chatting with other users, and a community component through its online English club.

Vontes

Vontes is a loyalty program that lets users collect redeemable points for online activities. The site bundles offers, such as from ecommerce and travel sites, and runs promotions for brands, like competitions or app launches. Participation can be as simple as liking a page or installing an app, but greater rewards are given for activities such as booking a trip through Vontes, or buying something in a partner store. Vontes is essentially a channel for user acquisition and promotions.

CumaCeban’s tight presentation won the jury’s heart at this event. According to William, the jury thought this product is an interesting fit for the regional market.
