PlayStation App promises to make the PS4 experience more social

First revealed at the Tokyo Game Show 2013 keynote presentation, the PlayStation App is a social one that will launch in tandem with the PlayStation 4 (PS4) later this year.

The app will allow users to send text or voice message to the friends on their PlayStation account, and invite them to multiplayer games. Given the addition of the share button on the Dualshock 4, it’s not surprising that Sony would want to push for more social integration in their flagship product. I’m glad they decided to go with an Android/iOS app at last, though. Text messaging on a product built for just that is definitely better than the clunky on-screen keyboard the PlayStation 3 currently possesses.

Apart from social features, the app will also allow users to browse the PlayStation Store and make purchases. Games bought via the app can be set to download immediately on the users’ home console, without them having to go home to do so.

True to its newfound support of indie developers, Sony has also designed the app to function as a native second screen for enabled games.

“There are many big publishers creating their own apps for games, like Watch Dogs or Battlefield, and that’s great,” president Shuhei Yoshida said, when asked about the app directly after the keynote at which it was presented.

He continued to describe how smaller developers would be able to use the App to connect to the PS4 and load up an application, negating the need for them to develop a brand new app to go with their game. Yoshida-san finished up by saying that the App is open to all PS4 developers.

The PlayStation App is expected to be released together with the PlayStation 4 this December, with the final launch date pending confirmation from Sony, so stay tuned.
