Game developer PopCap is getting pretty active in Southeast Asia. Evan Spytma, who leads the company’s efforts in the region, pinged us yesterday about Plants vs Zombies Live. This is not a live Plants vs Zombies game but a musical comedy that was held at Makati, Philippines last Friday. The musical looks fun (click here to view a clip) and attendance is free, although there is limited space for each comedy show. Evan shared more with me on how Plants vs Zombies Live came about:
This partnership evolved from both Ayala Malls and PopCap. […] We are very excited to partner with Ayala Malls, who already has established relationships with many leading brands and retailers, and are eager to leverage the Plants vs. Zombies brand to usher in significant growth opportunities for both Ayala Malls and PopCap Games.
And we were told that PopCap is looking to hold such similar events at other Southeast Asian countries:
Yes, we are currently exploring opportunities for expansion into other countries for both Plants vs. Zombies Live as well as Plants vs. Zombie merchandise. Judging by the turnout and positive reviews, I would expect Plants vs. Zombies Live to expand their tour to other countries in SE Asia.
But the Philippines has had the first taste of Plants and Zombie Live and more shows will be happening across the country at Ayala Malls. It’s always interesting to see games expand beyond the digital boundaries. The show isn’t for-profit which means the intention is mainly focused on brand promotion, with the aim of generating more Plants vs Zombies downloads. Maybe we can expect a show in China or Japan soon too!
