eTouch Launches New Feature Phones For Indonesia

Hong Kong mobile phone maker eTouch has just released five new feature phones in Indonesia. These products are the latest releases from the manufacturer, targeting the middle-class market segment which is dominated by teenagers.

Two of eTouch’s models are the I-360 and I-270 series, featuring a touch screen with dual GSM SIM cards that are internet-enabled. These phones still have relatively limited features, which technically brands them as feature phones.

The company is also producing music-centric phones with advanced speaker technologies and a candybar form factor. For the D-555 series there will be a handy alphanumeric keypad, while the D-498 Pro will sport a QWERTY keyboard (see picture below). There is also the TV phone 700 Pro which provides an analog television feature.

The general manager of sales and marketing for eTouch Indonesia, Hendru Susanto, hopes that by the end of 2012 this brand can be among the top five best-selling mobile phones in Indonesia. Last year eTouch sold 22 million units in Indonesia valued at US$ 2.7 billion.

Susanto predicts sales will rise 20 percent this year to 29 million units. He explains “We have started work towards building the image of our products, so that eTouch can become more familiar among our consumers.”

Indonesia is indeed a big market for feature phones. Usually teenagers and students use feature phones to access social media services like Twitter and Facebook, so many of them don’t really need smartphones. Perhaps the most important factor is that feature phones from local and China brands are far more affordable than their smartphone counterparts.
