Pioneer becomes first to support Apple CarPlay

Japanese company Pioneer is rolling out a firmware update to add Apple CarPlay support in its NEX 2014 series dashboard panels. Post update, the owners of iPhone 5 or above need to simply plug-in their device in the CarPlay supporting dashboard to launch the iOS-like user interface.

With Apple CarPlay, users can make calls, send and receive text messages, and explore compatible apps from the dashboard panel. Drivers will be able to use Siri voice controls for getting directions as well. Earlier today, music streaming service Spotify updated its official app to support the Apple CarPlay.

Apple CarPlay got a lot of attention from in-car dashboard system manufacturers during its launch in March. While the other manufacturers stay mum about their support plans, Pioneer acted quick to push the update for its CarPlay compatible equipment.

Last month, Pioneer announced a shift in its focus towards connected car solutions by selling its DJ equipment unit. Apple CarPlay capable equipment appears to be one of the long term bets the company has placed.
