Ola Electric, the electric vehicle arm of Indian ride-hailing major Ola, will invest US$500 million to set up a battery innovation center (BIC) in Bengaluru.

Spread across half a million square feet, the BIC will have more than 165 high-end lab equipment for cell-related research and development. It will also be able to design, fabricate, and test battery packs at the same place.
The company further announced that it will recruit 500 doctorate holders and engineers for the new facility.

Ola Electric’s new cell facility comes amid criticism over the quality of its electric vehicles.
In April, the company recalled more than 1,000 units of its electric scooters after fire incidents.
Despite the hurdles, Ola Electric has plans to launch new EV products such as motorcycles, sedans, and SUVs. It also plans to launch self-driving taxis with level 3 autonomous capabilities.
