Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Taiwan-based tech firm Delta Electronics have jointly invested S$24 million (US$17.8 million) to open the Delta-NTU Corporate Lab for Advanced Robotics.

As part of Singapore’s Research Innovation and Enterprise 2025 plan, over the next three years, the lab will develop solutions addressing challenges brought about by labor shortages in the manufacturing and intralogistics industries.

It plans to create innovative systems supporting Industry 5.0, such as grip-adjusting robots for picking up fragile or hazardous materials, as well as smart sensing systems to power autonomous mobile robots.

The new Delta-NTU lab marks the latest collaboration between the two bodies. In 2016, the pair launched the Delta-NTU Corporate Laboratory for Cyber-Physical Systems, which ‌focused on innovations for smart manufacturing and learning and was further expanded for more research activities in 2018.

Since then, the cyber-physical systems lab team has filed 17 patents, of which eight have been issued, and sent over 200 papers to journals and conferences.

The projects created – which have been scaled up for industry adoption –  include a smart navigation system made up of autonomous logistics robots that can goods around factory floors, as well as analytics tech that improves learning effectiveness in the education industry.
