Nintendo has confirmed that it will start releasing content onto smart phones! Earlier this week Nikkei reported that the game company would be making some content, possibly demos, to release on iOS and Android devices, but Nintendo later rejected the claim.
In its highly anticipated board meeting today, President Satoru Iwata said that although consumers will not be seeing Mario games on their iPhones, he has commissioned a team to start working on making content for what he called “smart devices.” On top of that, he mentioned that he has not ruled out the usage of Nintendo’s favorite characters in this content.
The move to smart phones was also connected with Nintendo’s plans on reaching out to newer markets, namely China. Nintendo hopes that putting different content on smartphones will make the brand more approachable in these markets and establish a relationship that will hopefully grow.
Iwata went on to confirm that DS games will soon be playable on the Wii U’s virtual console. It was decided that the 3DS games could make good use of Wii U’s underutilized Gamepad.
Lots of big news, lots of rumors confirmed, but will this save Nintendo? Nintendo has certainly fallen on some hard times, with its annual forecast having changed from an expected 500 million in profit to a 240 million expected loss. In response, many of Nintendo’s board members are taking self imposed pay cuts of around 20-30%, and Iwata himself is taking a 50% cut over the next five months to help out. Talk about devotion!
