In brief: Report suggests Go-Jek may have secretly scraped Grab data

The Singapore map in Go-Jek’s app contains pick-up points that are very similar to Grab’s map.

In some cases, some of these pick-up points were created by Grab, meaning that had Grab not rolled out its services across Singapore, these pick-up points would not have existed.

According to Mothership, this means “either Go-Jek’s team manually copied all of Grab’s pick-up points onto their own map or they wrote a code to pull out the map data from Grab’s app.”

A number of pick-up points that are known to have been created by Grab specifically for partners, such as Singapore General Hospital, can be selected in the Go-Jek app.

It also appears to offer pick-ups from designated taxi stands that can only be used by regulated cabs, despite the fact that the Indonesian company is currently only able to offer private-car hailing in Singapore.

In October 2017, it was alleged that Uber had surreptitiously collected data on Grab drivers by using a data-scraping program. Grab acquired Uber’s Southeast Asian operations earlier this year.

Go-Jek launched its highly anticipated Singapore ride-hailing service last month.

Tech in Asia has contacted Go-Jek and Grab for comment.
