Tesla secures key approval to run robotaxi service in California
Tesla has received its first approval from California regulators, a step toward launching its robotaxi service in the state.
The California Public Utilities Commission granted Tesla a transportation charter-party carrier permit, allowing it to operate a fleet for pre-arranged employee transport.
This permit does not cover ride-hailing or autonomous vehicle services, which require separate approvals.
The commission confirmed that Tesla has not yet applied for additional permits needed to launch a full robotaxi service.
