Taiwan stocks drop as TSMC falls below $30.4
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) saw its shares drop 0.70% to NT$998.00 (US$30.33).
This marked the first closure below NT$1,000 (US$30.40) since November 2024.
Concerns over the profitability of TSMC’s additional US$100 billion investment in Arizona contributed significantly to the Taiex’s decline.
The Taiex, the benchmark index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange, fell by 116.92 points, or 0.52%, closing at 22,459.15. Turnover reached NT$337.99 billion (US$10.27 billion).
The decline was attributed to concerns over a potential recession in the United States President Donald Trump’s statements during a Fox News interview heightened these worries.
Analysts also noted the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s GDPNow tracker, which indicated a possibility of negative economic growth in the US for the first quarter.
