SoftBank acquires AI data center chipmaker Ampere for $6.5b

SoftBank Group Corp announced on Mar. 19 that it will acquire US-based chipmaker Ampere Computing in an all-cash deal valued at US$6.5 billion.

Ampere, founded in 2018 by former Intel president Renee James, specializes in central processing unit (CPU) chips for data centers, focusing on applications in AI.

Ampere’s CPUs, built on Arm architecture, are used by Oracle, which will sell its stake in the company along with Carlyle Group.

With this acquisition, Ampere joins Arm Holdings under SoftBank, strengthening its AI-focused chip portfolio.
