SoftBank-backed self-driving firm Wayve nears market launch

Wayve Technologies, a London-based self-driving company, is nearing a commercial launch with major automakers in the US and Germany.

The company plans to introduce its driver-assistance system soon but has not disclosed specific timelines or partners.

Its AI-powered software adapts quickly to new road conditions, showing similar performance in US trials with 500 hours of driving data. In Germany, adaptation reportedly took even less time.

Wayve’s technology navigates using driving data rather than detailed maps or pre-set rules. It has been tested in various vehicles, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Jaguar I-Pace.

Backed by SoftBank, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Uber, Wayve has expanded testing beyond the UK, first trialing its software in San Francisco last October.

Unlike competitors like Waymo and Tesla, it focuses on licensing its software to automakers instead of selling directly to consumers.

The company is also working with Uber to integrate its system into the ride-hailing platform for future autonomous vehicle deployment. CEO Alex Kendall noted that the required hardware is already in millions of vehicles, potentially accelerating commercialization.
