GlobalFoundries CEO backs US tariffs to boost chip demand
GlobalFoundries CEO Thomas Caulfield supports US tariffs on foreign-made chips, saying they would boost demand for domestic semiconductors.
Speaking at a Morgan Stanley investor conference on Mar. 4, Caulfield noted that tariffs, along with the US$52.7 billion Chips and Science Act and investment tax credits for chip-making equipment, could enhance US chip manufacturing capabilities.
Caulfield believes tariffs would push customers toward US-made chips, complementing the Chips Act’s role in expanding manufacturing capacity.
Set to become executive chairman next month, he expects tariffs and government support to drive US semiconductor growth.
