GlobalFoundries (GF), a major semiconductor manufacturer, has launched a new hub facility in Malaysia. It will provide 300 manufacturing roles to support the company’s sites in Singapore, Europe, and the US.

GF’s new office is located at Bayan Lepas, Penang, and will work closely with the recently opened GF Singapore fabrication plant.

Kay Chai Ang, chief manufacturing officer at GF, said that the government’s policies have “attracted a large base of highly skilled talent in our industry that will enable us to diversify our talent pool.”

Malaysia previously announced its target of achieving a 15% market share in the semiconductor and electronics industry by 2030 – up from 13%. Building the facility would help Penang’s efforts to “anchor our position as the Silicon Valley of the East,” added Chow Kon Yeow, the state’s chief minister.

GF makes semiconductors designed by companies including Qualcomm, MediaTek, and NXP Semiconductors. It is the world’s third-largest foundry by revenue after TSMC and Samsung.

The company’s chips can be found inside gadgets like smartphones, laptops, automobiles, video game consoles, and smart speakers.
