GlobalFoundries fined $500k over China chip exports
The US government fined GlobalFoundries US$500,000 for unauthorized semiconductor shipments to a Chinese entity.
The New York-based firm sent chips to SJ Semiconductor, linked to SMIC, which is on the US trade restriction list due to alleged military ties.
The Commerce Department reported GlobalFoundries made 74 shipments valued at US$17.1 million without the needed license.
SMIC and SJ Semiconductor were added to the entity list in 2020, requiring a usually difficult-to-obtain specific license for exports.
