Chinese apps return to India after 5 years ban
Chinese-origin apps Shein, Taobao, and Youku have returned to the Indian market after being banned following a border clash between India and China over four years ago.
Shein, now based in Singapore, launched a new app named “Shein India Fast Fashion” in January 2025.
According to app analytics firm Data.ai, the app is distributed by Reliance Retail.
Reliance has entered a licensing partnership with Shein for local production and sourcing in India.
Alibaba’s Youku and Taobao have also re-entered India, with Youku available since 2021 and Taobao relaunching in November 2024.
These apps’ return reflects efforts by Chinese-origin companies to rebuild their presence in India through partnerships and new strategies.
