Apple stock drops amid potential Chinese App Store probe

Apple’s stock fell about 1% on Feb. 5 after reports that Chinese regulators might investigate its App Store practices.

The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) is reviewing Apple’s 30% fee on in-app purchases and limitations on third-party payment options.

However, the regulator has not yet decided whether to initiate a formal probe.

Apple and China’s Ministry of Commerce did not respond to requests for comment on the situation.

This comes amid ongoing US-China trade tensions, with global regulators scrutinizing Apple’s App Store policies.

The European Union has already taken action, requiring Apple to allow third-party payment systems and app stores.

A Chinese investigation could further challenge Apple in a critical market, where it has seen declining sales and increasing competition from local firms like Huawei.
