Spotify, a popular music streaming service from Sweden, could launch in Singapore on the week of April 15. The news was first reported by TechinAsia, which wrote that the company has sent out events to an event to be held soon in the country. Straits Times then followed up with its own report.
The last time we heard from Spotify was in January when the company began hiring in Singapore and Hong Kong. Since launching in 2008, Spotify has expanded to 20 countries, and by March of this year, it has some 8 million paid users.
Unlike iTunes, where users pay to download and ‘own’ their music, Spotify lets listeners consume as much content as they want on a flat monthly fee. It’s premium version also lets consumers download music for offline listening.
Once a backwater for legal online music, Asia is finally starting to catch up. ITunes made a splash in Asia last year, and we may probably see Spotify expand into many parts of Asia in the coming months.
