Hong Kong rail operator Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTR) said it will partner with The Sandbox, a unit of Animoca Brands that operates a virtual gaming platform, to build a subway-themed digital amusement park on the metaverse.

MTR said it has acquired a plot of land on The Sandbox to build a virtual area where players can drive trains and operate a train station. The site may also include a railway museum to showcase moments that MTR intersects with the communities and cultures of Hong Kong.
The experience will be built with creative and social elements based on the VoxEdit and GameMaker tools provided to users of The Sandbox, and it will be open to the public. MTR will work with Collectiv, a strategic partner of The Sandbox, to develop a roadmap for the virtual station.
“Public transportation is going to play a major role in shaping the future of both the real world and the Metaverse,” said The Sandbox co-founder Sebastien Borget.
Meanwhile, MTR will also explore opportunities to use the virtual environment for STEM education – a teaching approach that combines science, tech, engineering, and math.
