Ramadan in Singapore: There’s a Web App for That

As Ramadan approaches, we have been covering how Indonesian telecoms, mobile phone vendors, and even start-ups are getting ready for it. Similarly, in Singapore many organizations are making preparations too. Take for example the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), who has created a mobile web app dedicated to the holy month.

In anticipation of the start of the fasting, the app launched back on July 14. It’s a mobile web app that you access via your browser, and it aims to engage the younger, tech-savvy population.

Visitors to the site can check for times to break their fast, listen to Koran verses, or even look up sermons on their smartphones.

The council has also revamped its website and launched Ramadan.sg with a corresponding Facebook page and Twitter account. So far @ramadansg has tweeted 1600 times and has been followed by just 200 followers, though I’m sure it’ll go up over time. The Facebook page has 3,000 likes since its soft launch last Ramadan.

A MUIS spokesman speaking to The Jakarta Globe explained:

Various new media platforms are used to create viral impact. We hope to develop a higher awareness level and mass participation so that Ramadan can be more meaningful.

This mobile web app is another encouraging new media initiative by the council, and we hope to see even more from them in the future. To access the app and try it for yourself, just click on over to m.officeofthemufti.sg.
