Groupon Acquires Malaysia’s Groupmore

One more asset in Asia: We now have Groupon Malaysia.

Groupon has just acquired Malaysia’s Groupmore for an undisclosed price. Groupmore was launched just 5 months but is already serving more than 52,000 users. Groupon calls Groupmore the “top group buying sites in the Malaysia”, which reach includes Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

“The acquisition of GroupsMore is further evidence of Groupon’s strong commitment to working with only the best collective buying sites throughout Asia and across the globe,” said Rob Solomon, president and chief operating officer of Groupon. “We will continue to help shape the way local merchants market themselves in every corner of the world.”

With this new addition, Groupon currently has more than 50 million subscribers in 40 countries. In Asia, Groupon has so far acquired from countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, India and Singapore. China is probably next as Groupon is geared to partner with Chinese Internet giant, Tencent.

“Well, I think its a good strategy for Groupon to compete with Google Offers. It’s more local and easier to connect with the local people compared to Google,” said Aaron Lee,  a blogger and avid Twitter user from Malaysia.
