Hello readers,
Behind every startup lies a story waiting to be told. Few stories, however, have captivated me as much as PatSnap’s did.
PatSnap first caught my attention when the company announced it had secured US $300 million in its latest funding round. Not only was this amount significantly bigger than preceding rounds, but it also catapulted the startup to unicorn status.
What makes PatSnap truly extraordinary, however, lies in the details of its story. Over the course of writing this article, a few insights also stood out.
One was how the growing importance of intangible assets like patents and trademarks confounds traditional accounting methods. As shown in a study conducted by consulting firm Ocean Tomo, such assets already make up more than 80% of the S&P 500’s market value. The more significant they become, the more demand there will be for tools to understand innovation, just like those PatSnap provides.
Another is the increasing convergence of many technologies in the world today. Take cars, for example. Unlike cars a decade ago, tomorrow’s electric vehicles will be equipped with artificial intelligence as well as powered by lithium-ion batteries and the internet of things.
Becoming a unicorn is just the beginning for PatSnap, and I can’t wait to see where the company’s next moves will take them.
