Gojek names ex-NASA engineer as information security chief

Former NASA engineer George Do was appointed to serve as chief information security officer for Indonesian tech giant Gojek, effective September this year.

Based in Singapore, Do is responsible for the security of Gojek’s portfolio of services as well as the company’s overall information security strategy and management of governance, risk, and compliance.

Prior to his appointment, the self-described “security evangelist” most recently held the same position at Equinix, a Nasdaq-listed real estate investment trust. During his time with the company, Do developed and led Equinix’s first Global Information Security Program which aimed to manage security risks across the global organization.

As an information security engineer at NASA, he was tasked with investigating security incidents and protecting government information assets. He also led security leadership roles at several tech companies including CenturyLink, TiVo, and Exodus.

“I look forward to working with my new colleagues to transform, scale, and future-proof Gojek’s global information security program. Key to that is building and maintaining security trust with all of our stakeholders and managing our cybersecurity risks within acceptable tolerance levels,” the new exec said in a statement.

He directly reports to Ajey Gore, Gojek’s group chief technology officer. “When a company grows as fast as ours, it must constantly upscale its information security to ensure the business can continue to operate and users can continue to trust that their information is safe with us,” Gore said.

Late last month, Gojek ventured into video streaming with its own service called GoPlay, partnering with local production houses to offer original content. Gojek also reportedly secured streaming rights to a number of recent Indonesian films and shows for access on the mobile-only video-streaming platform.

Prior to that, the company also launched GoGames, a gaming-focused service integrated into its main app in Indonesia. With the service, users can top up gaming credits, read gaming-focused articles, and consume content from influencers and professionals in the gaming scene.
