TV Tokyo leads Vietnamese digital entertainment firm’s series D round

Vietnam-based Pops Worldwide, a digital entertainment firm, has raised an undisclosed amount in its series D round led by Japan’s TV Tokyo Corporation. Before this round, the firm had raised US$37 million in total.

While it did not disclose the size of the deal, the firm previously told Tech in Asia that it had planned to raise US$50 million for its series D round.

Tech in Asia has reached out again to Pops for comment.

Founded in 2008 by Esther Nguyen, Pops has 690 million viewers across its OTT, YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook platforms. It offers both original content as well as material from local and international sources.

This is not the first time that Pops and TV Tokyo have worked together. In 2020, the firms joined hands to dub Japanese anime television shows such as Naruto, Sergeant Keroro, and My Guardian Characters for release across Southeast Asia.

Under the new partnership, the companies will promote the growth and expansion of anime content and other live-action series. Aimed at Gen Z audiences, TV Tokyo and Pops look to more heavily introduce Japanese content to Southeast Asian viewers.

TV Tokyo is a subsidiary of listed television broadcasting holding company TV Tokyo Holdings. The latter’s other subsidiaries include Nikkei CNBC and Paravi.

In August, Pops released its first metaverse project, DinoPops NFTs, which are based on a popular Vietnamese comic.
