Mesh Bio, a Singapore-based healthtech startup, has announced that its software medical device for diabetes – named HealthVector Diabetes – has been approved by the country’s Health Sciences Authority.

The firm said HealthVector Diabetes can estimate the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with Type 2 diabetes. CKD is a common complication that affects about 40% of diabetes patients in Singapore and requires about US$220 million each year for dialysis, said Mesh Bio, citing a local study.

According to the company, HealthVector Diabetes is the world’s first digital twin – systems used to build digital representations of health data – approved for clinical use.

The device uses clinical data from electronic medical records to calculate a risk score that can be used to assess kidney health. This can aid medical professionals in deciding and adjusting therapeutics to prevent the progression of kidney failure.

HealthVector Diabetes was validated by a study led by the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), using data from SingHealth Diabetes Registry and the National Healthcare Group.

The product will be piloted at SGH, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and selected polyclinics. This will be supported by the National Health Innovation Centre Singapore through the Innovation to Adopt grant.
