The company’s founder and CEO, Robert Vis, said in an email to employees that although the firm is still profitable and growing faster than its competitors, poor macroeconomic conditions and the looming recession have led the company to this move.

He also attributed the layoffs to growing the firm’s employee base too quickly, as well as the company being unable to integrate its acquisitions at a fast enough pace.

MessageBird, which was founded in 2011, made sure that employees affected will receive three months of compensation, a prorated bonus, a prorated paid unused time off, career support, and immigration support.

According to its website, the firm had over 800 employees spread across 11 locations around the world, including Singapore, China, and Australia.

Vis added that MessageBird is “fundamentally well-positioned to overcome economic headwinds,” having gone over US$600 million in run-rate revenue and processing 245 million emails per hour on Black Friday alone.
