Sea’s VC arm backs US ecommerce roll-up firm
Markai, an ecommerce roll-up firm based in the US, has raised US$4 million in a seed round led by Pear VC, with participation from Sea Capital, Signia Venture Partners, Western Technology Investment, and Graph Ventures, TechCrunch reported.
Founded by Stanford graduates Chenyu Ren and Tim Spencer earlier this year, Markai aims to acquire Chinese brands that want to tap into the global market. The company also targets ecommerce sellers from other Asian countries.
According to Spencer, Chinese sellers have an advantage in supply chain and price. However, they lack in marketing and branding, which are areas where Markai can help them.
The recommerce firm currently has 10 employees, which it plans to increase to 15 by February next year.
Markai competes with major names in the ecommerce roll-up industry such as Germany-based Berlin Brands Group, which announced its entrance to the Chinese market in June.
