Zespri, a New Zealand-based kiwi marketer founded in 1997, has launched Zag, a US$2 million initiative aimed at supporting “innovative” projects addressing the environmental challenges in the delivery of the fruit.
Zag will support initiatives that aim to improve kiwifruit quality, promote well-being through the fruit’s consumption, improve environmental conservation, and foster an industry for growers and local communities.
These projects will include those working in sustainable agriculture, tech, automation, packaging, supply chain, logistics, and industry education.
“We seek projects that not only address current challenges but also demonstrate a forward-looking vision for the future of the kiwifruit industry,” Jiunn Shih, innovation and sustainability officer at Zespri told Tech in Asia.
Zag will also look for solutions in packaging materials, aligning with its goal of using 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging by 2025.
Shih added that given the global reach of Zespri – which works with growers from New Zealand, Italy, Japan, South Korea, and France – Zag will invest in companies worldwide.
