Malaysia Digest – 9 Jul

Here you can find some interesting startup news around Malaysia, not only in its capital, Kuala Lumpur, but also other their startup hubs such as Penang, Malacca, and many more.

(1) Subscribers of U Mobile Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian mobile telco service provider, can now earn Facebook Credits, which is the official virtual currency on the world’s largest social network.

(2) MyDeal, one of the leading local deals sites in Malaysia, is put on the spot over a silly (packed with hilarity) reply on Facebook.

(3) Out of some 600,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia, slightly over 100,000 have websites. This drives home one main point there’s still plenty of room for technology to seep its way into the sphere of small firms in the country.

(4) The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) will be allocating RM5 million for the second MSC Malaysia Integrated Content Development Programme (ICON2), in an effort to spur growth in local content development.

(5) Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) CEO Badlisham Ghazali said the ICON2 initiative comes on the back of a successfully implemented two-year ICON program launched in 2009 to attract Malaysians interested in developing software for the then-nascent Web and mobile space.

(6) Herbal Asia 2011 will focus on trade opportunities for Malaysian herbal entrepreneurs.

(7) The government outlined three resolutions of combined approaches to build an ecosystem to make Malaysia an innovation nation.
