Line reports 25 million registered users in the USA, global revenues jump 16% from last quarter

Today popular messaging app Line revealed its revenues for the three-month span of July to September. If there were any doubts that the firm is poised to replace longtime heavyweights DeNA and Gree as Japan’s next big tech hope, the latest news should put them to rest. In those three months, the company raked in JPY 23 billion (US$211 million), a 16.6 percent rise from the previous quarter and a whopping 82.9 percent increase from the same period last year.

The company stated that it has 170 million monthly active users worldwide, 87 million of which come from Taiwan, Thailand, and Japan. While the company still hasn’t provided comprehensive regional breakdowns of its MAUs, it claims that its registered user count in the US has hit 25 million. That’s a sizeable jump from last August, when the app claimed to have 10 million registered users in the US.

Line makes most of its money from the game-related purchases but, unlike Japan’s other gaming giants, it has put its eggs in different baskets almost from the get go. By the end of the year it will introduce payments, taxi hailing, and food delivery services, which will accompany new gaming, manga, and music initiatives.

Those ventures are all starting in Japan first but the company says countries like America, Spain, Mexico, and Colombia should keep on the lookout for localized versions.
